4. Using IP addresses instead of FQDN's (fully qualified domain names) in your mail settings

If you are having problems sending or receiving email, sometimes this is down to your ISP not being able to translate domain names to IP addresses.

Now, there is no point in contacting your ISP because by the time you get through to a help desk and actually manage to explain to them and get them to understand what you are talking about, the issue usually clears itself up. Better then just to reconfigure your email programme.

In your email programme you usually enter an SMTP server (outgoing) and POP server (incoming).

123 Marbella POP and SMTP addresses are as follows:

SMTP Server Address is: SMTP.123MARBELLA.COM
POP Server Address is: POP.123MARBELLA.COM

If they say [ localhost ] then you need to change them because maybe your anti virus has changed them. (sometimes anti virus does that without telling you)

Now, if you are still having problems after that, then you should use an ip address.

The IP addresses of our two main mail servers are:

SMTP Server Address is: 65.17.213.171
POP Server Address is: 65.17.213.163

All you need to do is replace the mail server setting with one of the above ip addresses and in theory, unless you have other network problems, your email should work fine.

If you can then receive email but get an error trying to send email, then its quite possible you have a port problem.

The solution to that is to change your outgoing smtp port from 25 to 587.

5. What ports do I use for my email?

Please use the following ports for your email account.

POP:110
SMTP: 25 (if port 25 does not work, then try port 587)
IMAP: 143

6. Back Scatter

I am suddenly getting alot of bounce messages from emails that I did not send to.

Is this spam?
No, they are bounce messages.

Bounces are messages, officially called non-delivery reports (NDR) or delivery status notifications (DSN), that are generated by a mail server to report on the delivery status of an email message.

Problems arise with bounces if they are sent by a mail server to a non-local recipient. If a message did not originate locally, then a mail server cannot know for sure if the address it is sending the bounce to is forged or not. This quickly leads to unsolicited “backscatter” (or more rarely “outscatter”), sent to sites that never originated the email.

Quite often a spambot, spammer or viruses will use your email address to send out spam messages and because the email is purported to be from your email address, you will receive the undeliverable messages.

This type of spam is inconvenient only to you as you can receive as many as several hundred bounce messages in a short period of time.

But how can they send an email from my email address?
A spammer will set up a server somewhere and will create an automated email system and will simply enter any email address they come across. Its possible and very simple to do. The common word for this method is "spoofing" your email address.

Is there a problem with the 123 Marbella Mail Security?
They don't actually send via our server network, they cant do that unless they have your username and password (which is why its important to have secure passwords!) and even then we block a certain level of message going through our servers, so if a spammer tries to spam via our servers they will get caught straight away.

But can the spam filters not block these bounces?
No because spam filters are in place to stop spam and as backscatter is not spam, its very hard to prevent using spam filters only.

The following image shows the anatomy of email backscatter.

Will my domain get blacklisted because of the spam the spammer sends out?
No. All spam listings are performed by doing IP lookups on the origin of the message and where it was sent from. Because the

THE SOLUTION

So, how do I stop all of these messages coming in?
With most providers you would have to simply ride it out, however we have set up a new gateway using Alligate, which has special built in backscatter protection. You will need to make a few BASIC changes to your email programme and inform us when you have done so.

You need to do the following in this order:

1. Send us an email and let us know that you would like to move to the new gateway.

We will then email you back and let you know when it will be done. Usually we do it in the same hour. You will receive a confirmation.

Once you have received confirmation, go to the next step.

In your email programme you need to....
2. Change your Incoming POP 3 Server to: pop.123marbella.com
3. Change your Outgoing SMTP server to: smtp.123marbella.com
4. (this is optional) Change your SMTP port from port 25 to Port 587

Once you have changed your email settings, if your domain encounters a new backscatter attack, you will receive maybe between 5-10 backscattered emails, then the builtin backscatter protection on the gateway will prevent further emails from coming in.

7. How do a I use FTP to edit my web site files?

FTP is an abbreviation of File Transfer Protocol and you use an FTP programme to connect from your computer to the web server.

An FTP programme requires a username and password in order to access the secure web server so you will first of all need those details from us.

We have prepared tutorials for several of the major leading FTP programmes.

Click through to our Tutorials page to learn more.

8. What nameservers should I use in order to use your web hosting services?

We use the following DNS (Domain Name Servers).

DNS1.NAME-SERVICES.COM - 69.25.142.42
DNS2.NAME-SERVICES.COM - 216.52.184.248
DNS3.NAME-SERVICES.COM - 63.251.92.200
DNS4.NAME-SERVICES.COM - 69.64.145.225
DNS5.NAME-SERVICES.COM - 70.42.37.7

123 Marbella's DNS services set new standards for reliability, thanks in part to redundant name servers dispersed around the world.

Each server has multiple high-bandwidth Internet connections, back-up power, security, and access to three different major Internet backbones. This powerful system enables to handle millions of transactions with no interruption in service.

If you have registered a domain name with another company and would like us to manage the dns for you then its a service we can offer.

11. I want my web site to be on top of the search engines. How do I do it?

There are only two ways to get your site on the top of the search engines.

1. Hire an SEO (Search Engine Optimiser) to work your site.
2. Do it yourself.

The same way that anyone can fix their own plumbing, anyone can do SEO themselves. All its takes is years of learning, trial and error. Like most professions, SEO cannot be learnt overnight and the knowledge is obtained through years of experience however with enough time and determination you can do it yourself.

But, if you don't have years to spend learning and you want results now, then simply hire 123 Marbella to do your SEO.

Our rates start at €750 per month and we provide excellent results!

12. What is my smtp and pop server address?

Most email programmes require an SMTP (send mail tranfer protocol) and POP 3 (post office protocol 3) Server address in order to send and or receive email.

As of 5th of May 2008, these would be the correct server addresses for correctly sending and receiving mail on our network.

POP Server Address is: POP.123MARBELLA.COM
SMTP Server Address is: SMTP.123MARBELLA.COM

Now, if you are still having problems after changing to the above server addresses, then you should use an ip address instead..

The IP addresses of our two main mail servers are:

POP Server Address is: 65.17.213.163
SMTP Server Address is: 65.17.213.171

All you need to do is replace the mail server settings with the above ip addresses and in theory, unless you have other network problems, your email should work fine.

13. Am I blacklisted on the 123 Marbella Mail Network??

We run fairly tight security on our mail network so its possible that if you are having mail problems, you could be accidentally blacklisted.

Usually this happens by accident if you have tried to login to the mail server with incorrect username or password.

To check if you have been blacklisted on our mail network, try ONE of the following;

1) Go to http://mail.123marbella.com - if you can see the login page, then you are NOT blacklisted

2) Try to ping 65.17.213.163. If you can ping, then you are NOT blacklisted.

3) Try to telnet to port 110 on 65.17.213.163. If you can telnet, then you are NOT blacklisted.

If you HAVE been blacklisted DO NOT phone us, because unless you have your ip address, we wont be able to help you over the phone.

Simply proceed to our technical support form located at the url below and we will whitelist/unblock you.
